All plants need Sunlight to synthesise their energy and perform the process of photosynthesis. When the grow area for plants is in outdoors, they use Sun-rays for the same. Sun rays provide them with all required nutrients, heat and energy which they require to strengthen their roots and develop
resistance to disease. But if the grow area is chosen to be indoors, there is a requirement of source of energy that may replace the benefits of natural sun light. The equipment that may help plants to obtain energy that are cultivated indoors is known as “Grow Lights”.

Grow lights have various types, shapes and colours. But the most important aspect is the light
spectrum that is generated out of lights. Some lights have single coloured spectrum, some may
provide full colour spectrum. The horticulture experts say: That the plant grows stronger and blooms
if it is nurtured under full light spectrum. Let us first understand the meaning of Full light spectrum:
So, the wavelength of lights and the electromagnetic spectrum that covers light from Infra-red
Radiations to close to Ultra violet radiation is know as Full Spectrum light. The sun rays are known to
have the full spectrum lights. These lights generate radiations that are beneficial for Flora and Fauna.
When the plantation is planned indoors, these artificial Lights installed that generate pseudo
spectrum lights that are used in plants development. All the spectrums of light can not be seen by
naked eyes. As there are different radiations like ultra violet and infra-red radiation, but if the visible
spectrum light is merged, it is seen as a clear white light.
These lights can be measured by CRI (Colour rendering index). These lights are used in large sized
aquariums, gardening and various art purposes. In indoor plantation there is a specific impact of
different lights spectrums in different growth stages of plants. The plant’s growth and strength
depend largely on the lights they were provided with during every phase of their growth. The
sunlight consists of full spectrums. Many are not even visible from naked eyes. Hence when the
plants are grown outdoor, they do not need any additional lighting facility, As the Sun rays are
sufficient enough for plants growth and they have a fixed light cycle for them which enhances the
productivity and gives a proper black out time.
There are multiple benefits of full spectrum lights. Let us discuss some of them which are beneficial
for indoor plantation.
Plant’s requirement in different growth stages. Plantation in a closed area have their own different
requirements. From taking care of proper ventilations to providing them proper lights for getting
better yields. A normal home bulb light is not sufficient for plants. They require special grow lights
which produces special ultra violet rays for their photosynthesis procedure. Hence selection of grow
lights become quite important in indoor cultivation. There are various aspects like distance between
plants and lights, over watering in heated lights or normal watering in less heating lights etc. But the
most important aspect is, in which growth stage of a plant it requires which spectrum of light. Many
plants require red to orange spectrum lights in seedling stage and blue to violet spectrum lights in
vegetative stage. Some plants show a grow rate up-to 2%-4% if they are given the exposer of Red Blu
and yellow spectrum of lights like Lettuce and cabbage. It was also mentioned by some vegetative
cultivators that vegetables grow better and blooms in blue spectrum lights. Some florists have a
different opinion that red and yellow spectrum lights suits the flowers cultivation and enhances the
growth. In fact, plants use different spectrum of lights in their photosynthesis process.
Different spectrums of lights and their impact on plants:
Ultra-violet Lights: Ultra violet lights are although not visible from naked eyes because it comes
between the visible light spectrum and X Rays spectrum. These lights play an important role in plants
development. However not every type of Ultra violet radiation is beneficial for plants and human
beings. Ultra violet lights with less wavelength may harm plants and living beings. These lights are
divided in three categories based on their wavelength.
Ultra violet A) light: These lights are beneficial for plants and are used for their
photosynthesis process. These lights have high wavelength (Wavelength – 320 – 400 nn)
These are used by plants in all stages of their growth.
Ultra violet B) Light: These lights are not useful for plants and living beings both. These light
radiations may harm the cells of plants and humans both. Its wavelength is 290 – 320 nn
Ultra violet C) Lights: These lights cause a lot of damage to plants and human beings. As the
wavelength is lowest of this part, it is not at all beneficial. It has a wavelength of 100 –
290nn.
Hence plants require Ultra violet radiations but in required wavelength. If the wavelength decreases
it may cause severe damage.
Blue Spectrum: The wavelength of this spectrum (430nn – 450nn) shows the best results in
vegetative plantation. Horticulture experts believe that this spectrum should be provided in the
early stage of plants, during seedling and early plant growth stage. It has the most impact in that
growth stage of a plant.
Red Spectrum: This is the most essential spectrum for the growth of a plant. This wavelength (640nn
– 680nn) encourages over all plan development and most importantly it strengthens the stems of a
plant. This spectrum is vital for chlorophyll generation, flowering and fruit production. This spectrum
is essential for later growth stage of a plant.
Analysis:
Since all light spectrum plays an important role, hence for indoor plantation it is very important that
grow light installed should have full spectrum.
